A cross sectional study was carried out in the Medical Officer of Health division Kattankudy to assess the knowledge and practices of modem contraceptive methods and the decision making role of the husband regarding contraception among eligible couples. The data were collected by using pretested interviewer administrated questionnaire. A very small proportion ( 2.6 percent ) of participants unable to named at least a single method of modem contraceptive method. The knowledge on modem temporary contraceptive methods other than Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device was excellent. The primary health care staffs were the chief sources of knowledge providers for the modem contraceptive methods. The key role played by the PHM's in providing the Knowledge and services of modem contraceptive methods could be visualized in extent. The Government Hospitals, private dispensaries and the medias could be utilized for the internalization programmes of the modem contraceptive knowledge. The overall contraceptive prevalence was low compared to ever used contraception prevalence may be due to the recent Tsunami tidal wave attack and the ethnic conflict and lack of services and motivation at present. This has to be addressed by proper authorities to be given more attention by the government and non governmental organization work in the field of family planning. Though the males approval for contraception was very high the initial need for family planning was shouted by the wives, in this regard the global attention has to be paid.
