Abstract: Oesophageal varices is the commonest cause of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding in Sri Lanka. Endoscopic sclerotherapy(EST) and rubber band ligation (RBL) have become the main treatment modalities, as they carry a lower morbidity and mortality compared to shunt surgery.
